WELCOME TO
MODISA WILDLIFE PROJECT
There’s a place in Botswana where the horizon never ends, the stars burn brighter, and every day begins with the call of the wild. This is Modisa – 17,000 hectares (170 km²) of private wildlife area and guardians of a further 700,000 hectares (7,000 km²) of community-owned wildlife management land within the vast Kalahari ecosystem, where conservation isn’t a concept, it’s a way of life.
Founded in 2010 by Valentin Grüner from Germany and Mikkel Legarth from Denmark, Modisa is a working wildlife project with one clear mission – to protect and restore the fragile grasslands and the species that depend on them. Here, guests don’t just watch from the sidelines. You join the rhythm of the land, tracking wildlife, gathering data, and seeing the direct impact of your time in the field.
And then there’s Sirga. Rescued as a tiny cub and raised under Valentin’s care, her story captured hearts across the globe in the award-winning series Saving Sirga aired on Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime. Seeing her up close – always from a safe distance – is a moment you’ll never forget.
Come ready for dust on your boots, sunsets you’ll never shake from memory, and a deeper connection to the wild than you thought possible.

Activity Overview

As a guest at Modisa, every day takes you into the field. You’ll track and record wildlife movements, gathering data that feeds directly into active conservation work.
From predator sightings to behaviour notes, each observation plays a role in guiding how Modisa protects its 17,000-hectare reserve and the surrounding Kalahari landscape.

The learning goes far beyond the basics. You’ll dive into the realities of managing wildlife in the Kalahari – from adapting to a shifting climate to finding solutions for human-wildlife conflict.
By the time you leave, you’ll carry not just memories, but a deeper understanding of conservation and the role you can play in protecting wild places.

This is more than just watching from the sidelines. You’ll get hands-on – setting camera traps, restoring habitats, or helping analyse field data.
At Modisa, guests are active contributors, and every task feeds directly into the mission to protect the Kalahari and its wildlife.

Modisa offers rare moments to watch Kalahari wildlife up close. Spend time in the hide near the waterhole, observing animals as they come to drink under the shifting light of day or the brilliance of the night sky.
These encounters bring you closer to the rhythms of the wild and reveal the conservation work that helps keep them thriving.

Life at Modisa doesn’t fade with the light — it transforms. As the sun sinks, the Kalahari sky explodes with stars, offering some of the clearest stargazing anywhere on Earth.
Evenings are spent around the fire, sharing stories and letting the night sounds roll in. And when you want to explore further, the wild is never far away.

Meeting Sirga with Valentin Grüner is a moment that stays with you. Rescued as a cub and raised at Modisa, she offers a rare, authentic glimpse into the world of wildlife rescue.
Every encounter is from a respectful distance, never staged — just a powerful connection between man and lioness, witnessed in the heart of the Kalahari.

Kalahari Desert: The Heart of Modisa Wildlife Project
Nestled in the southwestern part of Botswana, adjacent to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the Modisa Wildlife Project offers a unique immersion in the vast and serene Kalahari Desert. Located about 110 km from Tsabong, the nearest town, Modisa provides a genuine desert adventure, surrounded by an extraordinary landscape.
Climate & Seasons
The climate of the Kalahari Desert showcases dramatic seasonal variations, each bringing its own unique experience:
Summer (December to February): The hottest and wettest time of the year, temperatures soar to 35-40°C (95-104°F) or more. Heavy showers during this period rejuvenate the desert landscape and invigorate its diverse wildlife, offering a lush and vibrant setting.
Shoulder Season (April & May): A milder climate prevails, with daytime temperatures ranging from 25-30°C (77-86°F) and dropping to cooler 10-15°C (50-59°F) at night. This season is perfect for comfortable wildlife observation and experiencing the desert's tranquility.
Winter (June to August): Characterized by freezing nights, often dropping to 0°C (32°F) or lower, and comfortably mild daytime temperatures of 20-25°C (68-77°F). The winter months offer clear skies and a unique perspective of the Kalahari's stark beauty.
Spring (September to November): A gradual warming occurs, with daytime temperatures reaching 30-35°C (86-95°F) and nights at 10-15°C(50-59°F). The landscape remains dry and parched, especially in October, the hottest and driest month, as it awaits the summer rains.
Travelers to Modisa should prepare for the dramatic temperature shifts characteristic of the Kalahari. Packing appropriately for both cool nights and hot days is essential to comfortably enjoy the desert's distinct beauty. This preparation ensures a fulfilling and immersive experience in the heart of one of Africa's most extraordinary natural environments.

"ONE OF THE BET EXPERIENCES IN MY LIFE SO FAR!
One of the best experiences in my life so far has been experiencing the brand new Modisa Camp 2.0, situated in one of the most remote areas of the world. As one of the first guests in the new camp, I gained real-life experience of the rough and wild climate of the Kalahari.
The journey to the camp itself was an adventure! When I first heard the special warning call of a Jackal, or learned to differentiate between the booming call of a male Ostrich and the roaring of a lion, I realized I was truly in the midst of a wild area. Being part of one of the last intact ecosystems in the world and helping to protect it was an honor! During our stay, we learned a lot about the unique climate, the wildlife, the plants, and the challenges of balancing wildlife conservation with hunting issues. This was through various activities like lectures, bush walks with the great Modisa guide Thato, checking the camera traps, and sleeping in the brand-new hideout.
We were even lucky enough to see almost all of the rare predators of the Kalahari during our sleepouts at the waterhole. Totally amazing! We also helped Val and his friendly team with their daily work, which was really interesting. After work, there was always time for a fun volleyball match between Germany and Botswana or a delicious braai over the fire. In summary, I totally recommend the Modisa Wildlife Project and hope to come back in some years.
Dankie to Val and his great team for this amazing stay!"
-Marina Nieberle, Germany

The people are amazing and I have experienced things I could never have dreamed of. I just ended my fourth stay at Modisa, and I can not imagine to never come back again.
New adventures are literally at your doorstep every day, and you can just reach out and grab it! Going to Modisa was the best decision of my life so far" 😊

"EVERYTHING YOU COULD EVER DREAM OF!!
No need to think about it guys, just book it and go!! You're guaranteed the time of your life!"

"BREATHTAKING EXPERIENCE ☀️
Modisa Wildlife Project has made my dream come true about living the distressful life in the bush around wild animals 😍 A side gift for me is all the wonderful and inspiring people I have met and the things I've learned about nature conservation in Kalahari. I'm touched to tears by seeing true love between Val and Sirga and being so incredibly lucky to see Sirga hunt 😊
Thank you so much Val and Mikkel - what you do is unique 🙏"
Louise Broberg, Denmark
"MODISA = EVERLASTING MEMORIES!
It was not my first trip to Modisa and once again it was exciting, enlightening and fulfilling in more ways that I could have ever imagined. Modisa is about the beautiful place as itself, the nature, the sounds of the African bush, the feelings you get, the people you'll meet and become friends with, the overwhelming staff and nevertheless Modisa is about two amazing friends who put all the energy in their wildlife project.
The whole Modisa family makes your stay unforgettable and you receive an understanding of the conservation in Kalahari and the need of sustainability of wildlife and ecosystem.
Once you've been there you don't want to leave...or you come back again and again!"
Dorte Althoff, Germany
Restoring the Kalahari’s Natural Balance
Since the late 1950s, veterinary fences, farming, and habitat fragmentation have cut off ancient herbivore migrations, reducing herds from millions to just tens of thousands. Modisa’s work aims to restore these movements and rebuild healthy wildlife populations, paving the way for apex predators to reclaim their rightful range.
Protecting Apex Predators
Lions, leopards, and hyenas are essential to the Kalahari’s ecosystem but remain vulnerable to human–wildlife conflict. Through collars, camera traps, and on-the-ground monitoring, Modisa tracks these species daily. Guests help log sightings, check camera traps, and analyse data, contributing directly to conflict mitigation and long-term predator protection.
Community-Led Conservation
Conservation succeeds when it works for the people who share the land. Modisa partners with the Khawa community, creating jobs, raising awareness, and building opportunity through wildlife protection. By co-managing 700,000 hectares of community-owned land (KD-15) that links to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Modisa helps create a living model of coexistence.
Carbon & Climate Innovation
Grasslands store vast amounts of carbon beneath the soil. In partnership with Gazelle Ecosolutions, Modisa is piloting Botswana’s first nature-based carbon initiative, showing how healthy savannas can help address climate change while supporting biodiversity.
Safeguarding Vultures & Rare Species
As a designated Vulture Safe Zone with Raptors Botswana, Modisa works alongside Kalahari Research & Conservation and Akashinga to protect not just vultures but the full spectrum of Kalahari wildlife, from cheetahs to elusive brown hyenas.
Keeping Water Flowing
In the semi-arid Kalahari, waterpoints can be the difference between survival and decline. Modisa maintains and monitors artificial water sources across the reserve, with guests often witnessing incredible camera-trap footage, sometimes capturing lions, antelope, and leopards in the same day.
Sustainable by Design
The Modisa camp, built from upcycled shipping containers and powered entirely by solar energy, reflects our belief in intentional simplicity. With small guest groups and minimal environmental footprint, the focus stays firmly on authentic, field-based conservation.
